How (and why) Model98.org came to be..
Once upon a time, many, many years ago (give or take 1999) there existed a website called M98Center.com. M98Center.com was perhaps the first successful website which focused solely on modifications to the Model 98. M98Center.com did well, and lived a long life. However, eventually, it all came to an end. No backups could be restored, and everything was lost.
Two of the frequent visitors of M98Center.com, Breene, and Natural Newbie, decided to make a new site which focused on the same thing. In 2003, Model98.net was born. Model98.net featured tons of information, all original content written by Breene and Natural Newbie, and other members of the forum. Most of the Information you'll find on Model98.org today was also on Model98.net. Model98.net's popularity sky-rocketed. The amount of information soared. The forums grew, which led to more ideas, which were also published. As it is commonly known, though, all great things come to an end. In may of 2005, Model98.net went down, and did not come back up.
The regular members of Model98.net were devastated. Model98.net was their home, and many of them outright refused to move on to any other forum. Not long after, a "temporary" forum was set-up by Brandon Foltz, a member of Model98.net. At this point, Breene and Natural Newbie were practically wiped off of the face of the earth. They could not be found anywhere, and could not be contacted. This simple proboards forum was basically a place for us to all get together, since we had met many people on Model98.net. We had no information from Model98.net, and nobody "new" was attracted to the forum. We felt as though it was the end.
That temporary forum still exists, and can be viewed here though it is now completely abandoned. While the temporary forum was great, we all knew that it would not last long, and that Model98.net could not live on through it.
After about 5 months of using the Proboards forum, Tippmaster started this thread. He simply stated what everyone was thinking, and offered a solution, a new Model98.net built by the former members. Slowly, a new Model98.net was created, known now as Model98.org.
However, the story does not end here. Not even close. While Model98.org was great, Tippmaster did not have the rights to use any of Model98.net's previous info, so it was left out. All of it had to be re-created. It happened slowly, and even after months, the site was nowhere near what Model98.net was.
After Model98.org lived for several months, Paint Freak 98, one of the earliest members of Model98.net, was contacted by Natural Newbie. He offered the backups of Model98.net and told him to re-create it, because he was too busy to do anything with it (understandably of course, NN had graduated from college by this time). Then, 98Central.net was created.
98Central.net was almost a direct replica of Model98.net. Why wasn't it left up then? Well, it may have stayed, but there was one problem. The ex-members of Model98.net worked extremely hard on Model98.org, and making it as good as they could. It just didn't seem right that all of that work was in vain. Also, a more important problem, was that the backup used to restore the forums of Model98.net was extremely outdated, by perhaps 7-8 months. Meaning that more than half of it was gone.
After countless debates between Paint Freak 98 and Tippmaster on how to merge the sites in the most beneficial way possible, it was decided. Model98.org's forums were kept, and Model98.net's were never used again. This was because Model98.org's forums were doing well, and Model98.net's forum backup was so old, that it would've almost been like starting fresh.
ALL of Model98.net's articles, modifications, useful info, and everything else was brought into Model98.org, the new Model98.net. At last, Model98.net was re-incarnated. Model98.org now has over 5000 members, which is almost twice as much as Model98.net had at it's end. After the new Model98.org lived for about a year, Natural Newbie signed up. He exchanged pm's with some members, but did not post anything. Shortly after, Breene rejoined us, and is now an active administrator of the site once again, as it should be. After all we've been through, we don't think this community will be easily brought down.
